Patrick Harlan, a.k.a. Pakkun, is one of the best-known foreign celebrities in Japan.
The Colorado native and Harvard graduate has worked as a professional entertainer here since 1996. He captured audiences' attention as the the boke-yaku, or “funny man” foil, in the comedy duo PakkunMakkun, and has acted in movies and television series, including an NHK historical drama depicting the life of the Meiji hero Ryoma Sakamoto, in which he played the Anglo-German Japanologist Ernest Satow.
He makes regular TV appearances as a news commentator, and as the host of BS-TBS's Gaikokujin kisha wa mita (Through Foreign Journalists' Eyes). He is also an adjunct professor at Tokyo Tech University and an author and columnist for Newsweek Online and other publications. With a repertoire that spans from silly to serious, Patrick is in a unique position to observe and share insights on Japan's news media and entertainment industry.
