元台湾総統 李登輝
7月23日(木)12:00-13:30
Lee Teng-hui, the former president of Taiwan (the Republic of China), will come to the Club to discuss the "Establishment of Taiwanese Autonomy."
Born in 1923, Lee succeeded Chiang Ching-kuo as president of the Republic of China and chairman of the ruling Nationalist Party (Kuomintang or KMT) in 1988. He was re-elected president by the National Assembly in 1990.
Eighteen years earlier, Chiang had appointed Lee as minister without portfolio in the Cabinet, with major responsibilities for overseeing the agricultural economy. The appointment led to a successful career in politics and also began his close relationship with Chiang.
Taiwan held its first free election on March 23, 1996, with Lee winning a landslide victory after he faced down a menacing China - which suspected him of privately favoring independence.
