For Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui, his speech on August 6 this year will symbolize the significance of his hometown as the world's first atomic-bombed city and its ongoing struggle to realize a world free of nuclear weapons.
Mayor Matsui will spell out his city's renewed resolve on the 70th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing not to repeat such a tragedy, and to join forces with the other atomic-bombed city of Nagasaki in calling for the creation of a legal framework toward banning nuclear weapons.
The 70th anniversaries in Hiroshima and Nagasaki come as the Japanese government is taking steps to exercise the right of collective self-defense, a move criticized in some quarters as a violation of the war-renouncing Constitution.
Matsui joined the then-Labor Ministry in 1976 after graduating from Kyoto University. He served in various positions, including first secretary at the Japanese Embassy in Britain and director-general of the Secretariat of the Central Labor Relations Commission. He was first elected Hiroshima mayor in 2011 and was reelected this year.
