Like many lawmakers of both ruling and opposition parties today, Hajime Funada hails from a political family. His grandfather Naka served as Defense Agency Director-General, Vice President of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and House of Representatives speaker; and his father Yuzuru was governor of Tochigi Prefecture after a stint in the House of Councillors.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has assigned Funada, 61, to push for revision of the postwar Constitution. As chairman of the Headquarters for the Promotion of Revision to the Constitution, he recently proposed mentioning Abe's policy of "proactive contribution to peace"in a preamble of the revised Constitution.
He will come to the Club to keep us abreast of progress made so far in achieving his objective and to explain possible consequences of the proposed constitutional revision to both Japan and other countries.
Initially elected to the powerful lower house in 1979 as the youngest winner of a general election, Funada represents Tochigi Prefecture's No. 1 constituency. He served as Director-General of the then-Economic Planning Agency in 1992-1993 under the government of Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa.
