Almost four years after the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami triggered the Fukushima nuclear disaster, residents of the northeastern Japan prefecture have been struggling to cope with economic, political and, above all, environmental hardship.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has visited the affected area, although his remarks that the situation at the Fukushima nuclear plant is under control have been greeted with skepticism.
Since his election as Fukushima governor in October, Masao Uchibori has attempted to speed up reconstruction by acting as the top salesman for Fukushima Prefecture, a major source of farm and marine products. He recently hosted a promotional campaign to dispel harmful rumors at Fukushima's pilot shop "Midette" in Tokyo, with the ambassadors of New Zealand, Australia, Britain and Canada all attending.
A native of Nagano Prefecture, Uchibori joined the then Home Affairs Ministry in 1986 after graduating from the University of Tokyo. He held a number of posts, including a stint with the Finance Ministry, before joining the Fukushima prefectural government in 2001.
He served as Fukushima vice governor from 2006 until his successful campaign for the governor's post.
Uchibori, 50, says he will come to the club with a special message for the international community ahead of the fourth anniversary of the triple disasters of 2011.
