Yomiuri Giants manager Tatsunori Hara and former Giants and New York Yankees slugger Hideki Matsui are household names in Japan.
Hara, a former third baseman and cleanup hitter in the 1980s and 1990s. As Giants manager, he guided the nation's oldest pro baseball club to the Japan Championship. He also skippered the victorious Japanese team in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.Hara, 56, has long been known as ''wakadaisho'' or young master because of his energetic look and trademark big eyes.
Although he retired as a baseball player two years ago, Hideki ''Godzilla'' Matsui is still an immensely popular and sought-after figure in Japan. In a rare speech before a New York audience in 2013, he said he wants to instil a love of baseball in a new generation of players and fans.
Hara and Matsui will make their first FCCJ appearances to explain an unprecedented joint campaign with Matsui's former New York Yankees teammate and captain Derek Jeter to host a charity baseball event, "Support Our Kids" at Tokyo Dome in March for junior high school students from the Tohoku disaster-hit region as well as American students who live in Japan. The pair will also host a baseball clinic for juniors and each will coach a team for the charity baseball game.
Matsui is a three-time Central League Most Valuable Player while with the Yomiuri Giants and the MVP of the 2009 World Series as a member of the New York Yankees organization. He was a recipient of the People's Honor Award in 2013 with his mentor, former Giants manager Shigeo Nagashima.
