Cesar Purisima sticks to his beliefs. His first spell as the Philippines' finance minister suddenly ended in July 2005 when he resigned after news broke that then-President Gloria Arroyo allegedly rigged the 2004 election.
Now in 2014, Purisma is in the fourth year of his second spell in the job. He's the main backer of President Benigno Aquino's anti-corruption drive, championing the idea that "good governance leads to good economics." In 2012, he was named Finance Minister of the Year by Euromoney.
Purisima is in charge of an economy that grew last quarter at an annualized rate of 5.4 percent as a rebound in manufacturing and exports boosted Aquino's drive to transform the nation into one of Asia's fastest growing economies. His nation has to deal with the fallout from the Federal Reserve's monetary tightening as well as natural disasters such as last year's Super Typhoon Haiyan.
Purisima has an MBA with a specialization in international economics from the Kellogg Schools of Management at Northwestern University, and spent much of his career in the financial sector before entering government. He's also served in the Land Bank of the Philippines, the National Power Corporation, the Monetary Board of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the Energy Development Corporation, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
