It might sound like the Ministry of Justice is somewhat out of place in the process of formulating the Abenomics growth strategy, to which the prime minister is strongly committed. But the fact is the ministry has much to do in preparing the legal conditions for this strategy, which he presented in the "third arrow" reform policy package announced recently.
The strategy pledged to reform corporate governance,accept more foreign workers and bring many more tourists into Japan. Before any of that can be done, however, the government must urgently review and amend legal frameworks in each area.
Sadakazu Tanigaki, the Justice Minister and a heavyweight in the Abe administration will addresssuch topics as amending the Corporation Act, creating new immigration procedures and increasingthe number of foreign workers. He will also update the FCCJ on government efforts toward reconstructing the earthquake-devastated Tohoku region.
Tanigaki is a member of the House of Representatives in his eleventh term. He has served asFinance Minister, Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and for other cabinet posts. Tanigaki was the President of the LDP in 2009-2012 when the party was out of power.
He graduated from Tokyo University, Faculty of Law in 1972. He was a lawyer before turning to political life. He is a great fan of mountaineering and sports cycling.
