For anyone who has even a passing familiarity with Japanese politics, Shintaro Ishihara hardly needs an introduction. His diverse career dates back to the 1950s and spans the worlds of literature, cinema, and, ultimately, politics. He remains a controversial figure, with a legion of admirers but often an even larger number of critics and enemies.

After four landslide victories and a thirteen-year reign as Tokyo governor, Shintaro Ishihara decided in November 2012 to return to national politics as head of the Sunrise Party and then, days later, as co-leader of the much larger Japan Restoration Party, which he formed with Osaka mayor Toru Hashimoto.

Although the JRP came close to overthrowing the Democratic Party of Japan as the nation's largest opposition force, it's now difficult to see it as anything other than a failure, as infighting between the party’s eastern and western Japan factions is rampant. Almost every analyst sees the break-up of the Japan Restoration Party as simply a matter of time.

Now age 81 but as ambitious and pugnacious as ever, what does Ishihara intend to do next? How does he view the Abe administration? Hashimoto? Relations with China, South Korea, and the United States?
