Yukiya Amano is Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, an intergovernmental organization that promotes nuclear energy and works to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

The agency has been busy in the last three years with multiple missions to Japan following the triple meltdowns the Tokyo Electric Power Co-operated Fukushima Daiichi nuclear station, the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986. The calamity has all but ended a much-vaunted nuclear renaissance globally.

The agency has also been working on the verification of Iranian commitments under a landmark deal in November on Tehran's disputed nuclear programme and recently gave the green light for Iran to receive a second release of frozen funds after confirming the country had taken steps to curtail its uranium enrichment activities.

A graduate of Tokyo University's Faculty of Law, Amano has had a long career in academia, diplomacy and nuclear disarmament and safety. He joined Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1972 and has postings in Belgium, France, Laos, Switzerland and the United States.

During his career he has held several posts in nuclear disarmament including Governmental Expert on Missiles to a United Nations Panel and Ambassador, Director-General for Arms Control at the Japanese Foreign Ministry. He has also spent time as a lecturer and visiting scholar at universities including Sophia University in Tokyo and the Monterey Institute of International Studies in the U.S.

Come and listen to Amano speak about the role of the IAEA as Japan prepares to finalize an energy plan that will include nuclear energy, though on a reduced scale, while countries including Italy, Germany and Switzerland have turned away from the energy source and embraced renewables.
