Once again, trouble in the Crimea is causing anxiety in capitals world-wide. Russian troops and armour have massed along the eastern border of the Ukraine, sending a clear message about Russia's intention to assert control, especially over the strategic Crimean peninsula that controls access to the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. Indeed, the peninsula has already controversially announced its decision to revert to Russia, supposedly legitimized by a referendum to be this coming Sunday.
For this event, the Ukrainian ambassador to Japan Ihor Kharchenko will give his analysis of how the situation is unfolding and scenarios for the future of the Ukraine. Kharchenko is a career diplomat with the Ukrainian foreign office and has served abroad for many years, including in Romania, Poland and the UK. He has been in Japan since 2013.
