China's growing technological sophistication and its presumed territorial ambitions have alarmed its Asian neighbors as well as the United States. Its various disputes with Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam and other countries in Asia, and its action last November to establish an air defense identification zone over the East China Sea that encompasses the Japanese-administered Senkaku Islands (Diaoyu in China and Tiaoyutai in Taiwan) have led Japanese security experts to focus their annual report on a crisis management plan.
Masayuki Masuda, a senior fellow at the Northeast Asia Division of the National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS) within the Defense Ministry, will come to the club to talk about the NIDS China Security Report 2013 and how Japan is going to deal with geopolitical challenges.
A graduate of Hiroshima Shudo University and the Graduate School of Media & Governance at Keio University, Masuda briefly worked at NIDS before working as a special research fellow at the Institute for International Studies at Ocean University of China for three years. He rejoined NIDS as a senior research fellow in 2010.
