Until last September, Masako Mori was a little noticed minister in the Shinzo Abe cabinet. One of the most junior ministers in rank, she oversaw portfolios dealing with gender equality, women's empowerment, and the declining birthrate. Then, quite unexpectedly, she was handed responsibility for one of the most profoundly important and controversial pieces of legislation yet produced by the new government: the Act of the Protection of Specially Designated Secrets.
Suddenly, Masako Mori garnered national and international attention. It was she who led the presentation of the government's case for the necessity pass the bill. Facing great skepticism among opposition lawmakers, much of the media, and the public, her every word and gesture in the Diet was analyzed and sometimes criticized. In part through Minister Mori's efforts, the Act of the Protection of Specially Designated Secrets was successfully passed and became law in December, but many questions still surround it.
Now Masako Mori is coming to the FCCJ to answer those lingering questions, and she will no doubt field concerns on other important issues as well.
