Just over a year after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe came to power, the economy is a critical juncture with the focus on whether the nation can weather a sales-tax increase in April, begin to reel in its debt, and pull itself fully out of deflation. Three established Japan economists known for their out-of-the-box thinking will speak at the club to assess the chances of Abenomics succeeding in putting the economy back on a sustainable growth track.

Masamichi Adachi, a senior economist at JPMorgan Chase & Co. in Tokyo, is an author of his firm's flagship Global Data Watch publication. Adachi joined JPMorgan in 2006 after a 15-year stint at the Bank of Japan, where he worked as an economist and in several other positions. He graduated from Keio University, and attained an MBA from INSEAD, a French business school.

Masayuki Kichikawa is the chief Japan economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, where he studies both long-term and short-term trends in the nation's economy. Kichikawa, who was ranked #2 in the Nikkei Veritas and #3 in the Institutional Investor in 2013, began his career at Nomura Research Institute in 1984 and took up his present position in 2007. He received an MBA and master's degree in economics from Boston University.

Hiromichi Shirakawa is the chief economist for Japan at Credit Suisse Group AG, and held various roles at the central bank and the OECD before moving into the private sector. Shirakawa joined Credit Suisse in 2006 from UBS Investment Bank. He holds a BA in economics from Keio University and studied finance at the University of Washington's Graduate School of Business.
