When the September 11 terrorist attacks hit the United States in 2001, then-Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi turned to the 43-year-old man he had appointed as head of the then-Defense Agency to organize the nation's military response vis--a--vis Afghanistan and elsewhere. That man was Gen Nakatani, himself a former Ground Self-Defense Forces officer. In those days, it raised a lot of eyebrows that a young, former SDF man should head the Defense Agency.
Now more than a dozen years later, the gray-haired, 56-year-old Gen Nakatani is a key player in the Abe administration's defense policy. He heads the ruling LDP's security committee in the House of Representatives, and is an effective proponent of cutting the final restraints on the Self-Defense Forces and allowing it to become a "normal" military.
Nakatani also played a key role in advancing the Designated Secrets Law, which provoked statements of deep concernnot only from the opposition parties, but also media organizations and international human rights officials.
Why not come to the FCCJ and hear what Gen Nakatani has to say? Because this a man who shapes this administration's security policies and exercises real power in Abe-era Japan.
